About the Creator

I'm Basil. I made this site to showcase my zines, share information on how to make your own, and keep practicing my coding. I'm at the weird phase in my life where I know what I'm passionate about, but scared of having to commit to something as a career. I keep circling around going into UI or UX, doing front-end web development, or making zines and artists' books. For this project, I decided to try combining all three.

Around 90% of this site is coded by hand, and many of the assets you see here are things that I drew on paper, scanned in, and cleaned up in Photoshop. I wanted to make something that really captures the spirit of zines— unfiltered handmade human creativity.

In an era of the internet where the biggest social media sites push censorship and further stifle personal expression, I think it's important to keep self publishing alive. Historically, many zines were created to share thoughts and ideas without the scrutiny that comes from mainstream publishing. When you make and publish something yourself, you can do whatever you want with it. You don't have to worry about being palatable or following professional standards. The world is your oyster.

Thanks for browsing, and don't stop making zines.
