IVORY TOWER WINE LABEL BRANDING PROJECT

PHASE 3

DESIGN REVISIONS

The world changed due to COVID-19, and we moved everything online after an extended Spring Break. I met all of my students in Zoom during regular class times and followed up with the students working on wine label revisions. I recorded all of our Zoom video sessions. At this point, I met primarily with Louis Conradie and student finalists. After meeting individually with Louis, I learned that the design of the cider product label could be treated in a different style than that of the wine labels. The wine designs should be more traditional and refined, while the cider design could be more modern and casual. The student revisions were due April 2.

I met with students from both classes in Zoom to review the revisions and design process. I also discussed the revision process and provided an update on the project with all of my students from both sections. I received revisions from two students in section 101 and from seven students in section 102. My students submitted revised wine label designs, and I contacted 3 students about minor revisions before sending them on to Louis Conradie for review. I emailed George Glisan and Louis Conradie with an update. I submitted the revised designs to Louis Conradie and scheduled a follow-up meeting with him the following week.

Watch these video recordings of Zoom meetings with students Josh Buwick and Jessica Terrell from section 101 regarding their design revisions based on feedback from Louis Conradie. In the first meeting we discussed combining elements from both of their logos into a new design.

Digital Media Compostion I section 101 (Part 1): Ivory Tower Wine label revisions, Josh Buwick and Jessica Terrell

Digital Media Compostion I section 101 (Part 2): In this meeting with Josh Buwick and Jessica Terrell we reviewed further revisions and went over technical issues involving generating the digital assets in Photoshop and Illustrator to place into the label comps in InDesign.

After submitting the revised versions of both designs to the department of Fermentation Sciences, Louis Conradie decided to go with Josh Buwick's design as a finalist. He felt that Jessica's design was good but did not fit the style that they wanted for the wine products. Finally, Louis' department decided to go with a new logo for "The Scholar" brand of wines rather than a new Ivory Tower logo. During the Fall 2021 semester, I presented the wine label project to my classes again. Louis chose the winning logo for "The Scholar" designed by Amanda Gaspard. In Spring 2021, I worked with Amanda to revise the design and prepare it for press for the Phoenix Challenge (flexography print) team at Appalachian's Graphic Communications Management program.
