"Suppose that you are a brand new fifth-grade teacher and the time has come for you to teach a lesson on volume. You are invited to visit the class several days prior to the time when you are scheduled to teach it so that you are not a total stranger when you begin your lessons. During this time, you learn that the students' scores are widespread on most tests of academic achievement, and that they are a well-behaved class.
As you prepare the lesson, it's important that you have a good understanding of students' existing knowledge. They are likely to have all manner of conceptions and misconceptions. What do you think most 5th graders would already know about space filling and volume?"
