Create your own rhythm at App State.

App State’s Bachelor of Music (BM) in Music Performance - Jazz Studies prepares talented musicians like you to perform jazz and related styles commercially, in both live and recorded settings. Through applied and academic study, as well as participation in large and small ensembles, you will develop the skills necessary to present jazz repertoire, from traditional to contemporary influences.

As a Jazz Studies student, you will perform, improvise, compose, arrange and score music that represents multiple styles of jazz, all while exploring jazz history and literature, including the cultural sources and influences of the musical genre. You will also develop an understanding of the entrepreneurial skills — including copyright, licensing and permission requirements — necessary to teach and actively perform as a jazz musician.

Jazz Studies students learn from faculty who are also active performers nationally and internationally, and you’ll have the opportunity to play with and receive master classes from visiting guest artists.

Those who play the following instruments may audition for the Jazz Studies program: saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, and drum set. Learn more about the Hayes School of Music audition process.

App State’s renowned Hayes School of Music engages the local and regional community with around 200 concerts each year, giving students valuable performance experience.
