COVID-19 update from App State — April 29, 2022

App State’s progress report to campus provides the latest operational updates, COVID-19 safety protocols and other important information. Please note the status of the coronavirus and variants continues to develop. University COVID-19 safety protocols change, informed by the latest public health data. Always defer to communications with the most recent time and date stamp.

App State COVID-19 Updates

Chancellor Sheri Everts and the university’s COVID-19 response team continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation, and remain in regular contact with state and local public health agencies as well as UNC System leadership. Read her weekly messages to campus.

In her April 29 update to campus, Chancellor Everts shared that the university will reduce the frequency of university operations updates and Chancellor updates throughout the summer months. Additionally, beginning Monday, May 9, the university COVID-19 dashboard will change to providing overall metrics, as well as key end-of-year statistics. The university will continue emphasizing the importance of vaccines for the overall health and safety of the campus and community.

App State COVID-19 testing update:

The last on-campus walk-in testing clinic for the semester will be held Thursday, May 5. 

  • AppHealthCare continues to offer free testing weekdays from 8:30–10 a.m. for all community members, including students.

  • Student Health Service will continue to provide free testing for students during the summer, and also offers home testing kits available for purchase.

  • Use NCDHHS’s Find COVID-19 Tests page to find additional local testing locations.

Preparing for the end of the semester:

As the spring semester draws to a close and we prepare for the start of summer sessions, please note these key dates and updates.

  • App State will celebrate its newest graduates at Spring 2022 Commencement on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7.

  • Orientation for incoming students begins Friday, May 20.

  • Summer Session I begins Monday, May 23. Students can find more information about accessing digital textbooks and course materials at the University Bookstore’s Student Textbook Resources page. 

Final exam reminders

Final exams began today and will continue through Thursday, May 5 — view the exam schedule.

COVID-19 wellness reminders and information:

Watauga County’s COVID-19 Community Level remains Low, as classified by CDC. 

  • If you feel unwell for any reason, stay home.

  • Stay up-to-date with vaccinations.

    • Primary vaccine series and booster appointments continue to be available at Student Health Service for students, employees and community members. Call 828-262-3100 for an appointment.

    • $50 Amazon gift cards are still available for students and employees who get any COVID-19 shot at Student Health Service.

  • Take extra precautions if you are at high risk for severe disease.

  • Follow CDC guidance for isolation and get tested if you are exposed to COVID-19 or have symptoms.

  • Continue to wear a face covering at your discretion, upon the advice of your health care provider and where required by federal and state guidelines, such as in healthcare settings.
