Modular design involves a systematic design of instruction that focuses on content knowledge and is organized around the identification of big ideas or key understandings and then linking these ideas to appropriate learning resources. Modular design often employs a structure such as the Legacy cycle, as a means for promoting student learning. A course using Modular design divides its content based on big ideas and then organizes those ideas within the context of challenges for students to solve. Challenges then become an entry point to a series of learning activities. The subsequent learning activities offer students an opportunity to build in-depth knowledge. The combination of challenges and learning activities serve to form a module (Brophy, 2000).
