About Me
My name is Aaron
Tuck. This is my ninth year
teaching second grade at Yadkinville Elementary School, located in a
small rural community. I received my undergraduate degree from
UNC Wilmington in 2003. However, when I began teaching, I
realized there was so much more I had to learn about education and
experience alone would not fill that void. I enrolled in
Appalachian State University's elementary education master's program in
2005 and graduated in 2007. While returning to school was a
little intimidating at first, I soon realized continuing my own
education was what I needed to do to deepen my professional knowledge
and hone my teaching skills. In 2009, I achieved my National
Board Teaching certification, a process that continued to encourage my
own reflective practice. In 2009, Yadkin County saw a need among
its students and teachers and responded by beginning a literacy
initiative in partnership with Appalachian State University's reading
department. The county's belief was that if students receive a
solid reading foundation through the best literacy instruction and
early intervention in kindergarten through second grade, students will
be set up for success for the rest of their educational career. I
was excited about this new opportunity and volunteered to participate
in the first cohort group. The past three years have been
amazing! The reading program has helped to positively shape my
reading, writing, and word study instruction more that any other
professional endeavor to date. The most rewarding result of
participating in this master's program is witnessing my students'
growth and their enthusiasm for their own learning. As this
program draws to a close and I reflect upon the last three years, I am
confident that I am using best instructional practices in the teaching
of reading and have the research to support the instructional decisions
that I make.
