Photography

I have always enjoyed photography, but it wasn't until I bought a digital camera in 2009 that I started to pursue it as a hobby. I particularly enjoy photographing the wildflowers of the Southern Appalachians. Apparently I'm doing a decent enough job that some of my images have been used in print and online.

Botany Photos of the Day

A couple of my pictures have been featured by the University of British Columbia Botanical Gardens website as "Botany Photo of the Day."

Prickly Beauty

Solanum carolinense, Botany Photo of the Day on November 16, 2009. This plant was growing at Green Valley Park where we usually have our Department Picnics. While the others are playing soccer or swimming in the creek, I go around photographing plants...

Potted Arabidopsis 3
Arabidopsis flower size comparison

Arabidopsis thaliana, Botany Photo of the Day on March 10, 2010. Most interesting little plant ever! (Of course I may be biased by the fact that this is the plant we're working on in my lab.)

Polygonatum biflorum
Solomon's Seal Fruits

Polygonatum biflorum, Botany Photo of the Day on November 5, 2010. These images were taken at the Environmental Studies area behind the Greenwood Parking lot at ASU. This is the hike we usually do as a field trip with the Botany class in Fall semesters.

Ant Home for Rent

Hydnophytum moseleyanum, Botany Photo of the Day on June 6, 2011. This plant resides in the ASU Biology Greenhouse. This is an "ant plant" that grows internal chambers for ant colonization.

Bazzania trilobata
Bazzania trilobata

Bazzania trilobata, Botany Photo of the Day on August 10, 2011. This is a leafy liverwort that I found growing along a trail near Linville Falls. Identification help was provided by the knowledgeable graduate students at the ASU Herbarium!

Marchantia polymorpha

Marchantia polymorpha, Botany Photo of the Day on April 30, 2013. This is a picture of the asexual reproductive structures (called gemmae) on our liverwort used in Botany class.

Magnolia Flower

This picture was used in the "Gardening without harmful invasive plants" brochure published in 2010 by Plantlife International. This magnolia is growing right outside the Rankin Science building on the ASU campus.

Marchantia Sporangia

This picture was Bryophyte Photo of the Week on the International Association of Bryologists blog.

A Rainbow of Tubes

Pictures like these are getting used on all sorts of science-themed blogs. It's fun to play with the camera at the lab!
