The Role of Manipulatives and Symbols

As a group, write a paper giving your analysis of the role of manipulatives and symbols in supporting the students' understandings in the geometry lesson sequence. Your paper should include:

  • crucial aspects of the teacher's role in supporting students' development of ways of symbolizing and notating and
  • the role of manipulatives in enhancing student learning in the lessons.

You are to give an analysis, incorporating the readings from the course. In addition, the NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (2000) should be referenced when appropriate.

In your report, be sure to give specific examples by referring to the lesson plan, classroom events, the teacher's comments, and the small-group work. In addition to the paper, you are expected to present an overview of your analysis to the class and to facilitate discussion on your topic.
