Standard 1: Teacher Leadership
Teacher leaders assume the roles and responsibilities of collaborative leaders in schools and communities. Teachers demonstrate leadership in their classrooms, schools and professional organizations; they advocate for students and effective educational practices and policies; and they are role models for ethical leadership. Indicators are:
- Demonstrate effective ongoing communication, collaboration, and team-building among colleagues.
- Facilitate mentoring and coaching with novice teachers.
- Set goals and establish priorities while promoting educational initiatives that positively affect student learning.
- Participate in professional learning communities.
Context:
This artifact was created for RE 5725, Practicum in the Clinical Teaching of Reading, under the instruction of Dr. Darrell Morris. This course required me to complete a practicum experience in which I worked one-on-one with a third grade student and developed a plan for his reading instruction based on an initial assessment of his needs. This case report summarizes my experience working with him, the tutoring plan I developed, and his progress over the semester.
Rationale:
This case report demonstrates my understanding of conducting and interpreting reading assessments and developing an instructional plan best suited to a child's needs. Throughout the semester I worked with a supervisor where we would discuss the progress of my student and she would offer support and guidance for my future tutoring plan. This experience has prepared me to work with struggling readers and with colleagues in order to develop and implement a balanced reading instruction plan. This knowledge will be beneficial throughout my career as I work with struggling readers in my classroom.
2. RE 5710 Independent Reading Plan
Context:
This artifact was created for RE 5710, Seminar in Reading & Language Arts Research, under the instruction of Dr. Elizabeth Frye. This Independent Reading Plan summarizes how I plan to incorporate independent reading into my classroom and the practices I plan to implement. This plan was designed based on research I studyed during this course and on my own opinions of how to effectively incorporate independent reading in the classroom.
Rationale:
This Independent Reading Plan demonstrates my knowledge and understanding of the importance of independent reading in the classroom. Based on research I studied for this course, I have gained insight into how to improve students' reading by dedicating time each day to independent reading. This plan includes how I intend to set up my classroom library, the books I intend to have available, the instructional components of my independent reading lessons, and how to integrate independent reading with content areas. This plan shows my commitment to providing the best instruction methods to my students that are based on research in the reading field and what I have learned from the reading program.
